POSITION PURPOSE
Perform well design, drilling engineering, and related activities to support well planning on the Nam Du and U Minh field development project. Provide drilling engineering expertise and advice to the wider company, as directed.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Positions supervised
- Direct: Drilling Engineers within the Vietnam Drilling Dept.
- Indirect: 3rd party specialist drilling engineering consultants
Working relationships
- Internal:
+ Reports directly to the Drilling Superintendent
+ Works with colleagues in the Drilling Dept., Subsurface Dept., Project Facilities Team, HSE Dept., and Procurement/SCM Dept.
- External:
+ PVN technical staff; 3rd party engineering consultants; Drilling equipment suppliers & service providers; Industry peer groups
BASIC FUNCTION
Well Planning & Drilling Engineering:
• Responsible for leading well planning/design and drilling engineering on Nam Du and U Minh development wells
• Perform screening of various well design concepts and select the optimum design(s) for the project
• Evaluate opportunities to use new technology and drilling techniques that may enhance the well designs, mitigate drilling risks, reduce costs, or improve drilling performance. E.g. Drilling-With-Casing (DWC), slim-hole well design
• Routine well planning and drilling engineering activities: drillstring design, drilling fluid selection and design, cementing design, directional survey planning, bit selection, wellbore stability management, conductor design, etc.
• Perform detailed casing design including casing loads/stress analysis (using Landmark StressCheck software, or equivalent) to determine the minimum required technical specifications
• Coordinate well trajectory planning; working closely with the Subsurface Dept. and a 3rd party well planner
• Write the scope of work, source suitable providers, negotiate and finalise the agreed workscope and pricing, and oversee the work and close-out of drilling engineering studies performed by 3rd party specialists (e.g. borehole stability studies)
• Perform a gap analysis of the final well designs against the company drilling standards
• Assist with reviewing and updating company drilling standards as directed
Project Support Activities:
• Prepare detailed well time/cost estimates to support budgeting, AFE approval, and project economic analysis
• Support the Procurement Dept. during tendering activities for drilling equipment and services. E.g. prepare technical scopes of work and bidder lists, conduct bid technical evaluations, support bid commercial evaluations
• Support the HSE Dept. during preparation and approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment
• Provide input during preparation of the Field Development Plan and support during the FDP approval process
Drilling Operations Support:
• Prepare detailed drilling programmes for offshore use
• Provide technical support to the onshore/offshore team during drilling operations
• Prepare written dispensations from company drilling standards or drilling programmes for management approval
• Delegation of Authority (DOA) for the Drilling Superintendent, as needed
• Assist with drilling cost tracking and invoice processing and approval
• Assigned as the ‘Contract Champion’ for selected key drilling services and suppliers
• Coordinate non-conformance/unplanned event investigations, reporting, and close-out with suppliers
• Write Final Well Reports in conjunction with the Sr. Completion Engineer
• Prepare comprehensive Well Handover Data-Packs in conjunction with the Sr. Completion Engineer
HSE Support:
• Support company HSE initiatives and safety programmes
• Participate in HSE incident investigations
• Coordinate preliminary relief well plans, dynamic kill analysis, and blowout contingency plans
• Key member of the onshore Emergency Response Team (ERT) during rig operations
• Support permit applications for base oil, SOBM, explosives, radioactive sources, etc.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Ensure the final well designs fulfil all specified project needs and comply with the approved Wells Basis of Design
• Ensure well designs comply with company policies, relevant industry standards, and company drilling standards
• Support and actively participate in project management processes such as interface meetings, HAZOPS, risk assessments, cost reduction initiatives, etc.
• Ensure that all well planning activities and technical reports are completed to the minimum required standard, meet all specified requirements, and are delivered on time
• Ensure well cost estimates and AFEs meet company and project specified requirements
• Promote, encourage, and demonstrate company values in all day-day work interactions both internal and external
• Demonstrate a professional, collaborative approach, show mutual respect, and promote effective teamwork when dealing with management, colleagues within the drilling department and other disciplines, and external stakeholders
• Supervise, train, and develop Drilling Engineers working within the Vietnam drilling department
• Promote information sharing, especially lessons learnt and best practices, related to well planning and drilling engineering within the drilling department, project team, the company as a whole, and external stakeholders (e.g. PVN)
• Demonstrate a performance driven mind-set: share ideas, challenge norms, seek and apply lessons learnt, and focus on delivering HSE, budget, and operational performance improvements
• Engage with industry peer groups and the service sector to identify opportunities to further enhance well designs and drilling performance to deliver additional value to the project
• Provide regular status updates to the project management team on well planning activities. Identify and communicate any areas of concern along with recommended courses of action
POSITION DEMANDS
• Site visits to service contractor offices and operating bases, and the wellhead platform construction yard
• Occasional trips offshore to visit the jack up drilling rig and wellhead platforms
• Participation in visits to supplier’s factories to support long lead equipment acceptance (e.g. wellhead stack up tests)
• Participation in project meetings and workshops including making presentations on well planning progress to Management, PetroVietnam, and Vietnam Government Ministries

POSITION HOLDER REQUIREMENTS
*Formal Qualifications & Certification:
This position is open to Vietnamese National applicants only
Minimum Qualifications - Essential:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering (or another relevant engineering discipline)
• Valid well control certificate (equivalent to IWCF Surface BOP – Supervisor level)
Additional Qualifications – Desirable, Non Essential:
• Valid offshore medical certificate and offshore survival certificate
• Certificate of formal English language training
Other
• Must have a valid Vietnamese Passport (some international travel will be required)
*Previous Experience - Essential Requirements:
Drilling Engineering:
• Minimum 12 years’ experience working in various drilling engineering roles with established Oil and Gas Operators
• Minimum 5 years’ experience working at Senior Drilling Engineer level
• Minimum 2 years’ experience working offshore as a Wellsite Drilling Engineer
Field Development Projects:
• Directly involved in at least two field development projects in Vietnam involving wellhead platform drilling that have occurred during the past 10-years
• At least one of the projects to have utilised a jack-up drilling rig
• One of the projects should have occurred during the past 5-year period
• Involvement should have been during all project stages:
- Initial Concept Select phase to ODP approval;
- Define phase to FDP approval and project sanction;
- Execute phase: Detailed well planning and rig operations;
*Skills and Knowledge - Essential Requirements
Software:
• Fully competent to use Landmark StressCheck software for casing load analysis
• Industry standard drilling engineering software (e.g. Landmark) for hydraulics simulation, torque & drag simulation, casing wear prediction, etc.
• Rushmore Associates database to enter/extract drilling performance data
• MS Office standard packages (Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Outlook)
Well Planning & Drilling Engineering:
• Drillstring design and optimisation including drill-bit selection and vibration control
• Well trajectory design, directional drilling, and wellbore surveying
• Drilling fluid selection and design
• Cementing design, job planning, and operations
• Conductor design, stress/fatigue analysis, and installation methods
• Borehole stability assessment and control
• Drilling shallow hazard assessment and management
